Counseling Approaches Utilized

Solution-Focused Counseling Approach

Solution-Focused (SFBT & REBT) counseling parallels positive psychology which concentrates on what is right and what is working for people rather that dwelling on the past. It is a goal-oriented approach to therapy that emphasizes strengths and resiliencies of the individual by focusing on exemptions to their problems. Therapy focuses on identifying and increasing those positive behaviors that have worked in the past. This theoretical approach is grounded on the optimistic assumption that people are resourceful and competent and have the ability to construct solutions that can change the direction of their lives.  During counseling the therapist assists clients to recognize the resources that they already possess (resilience, courage, ingenuity,…) and use their past strengths to make positive change in their lives now.  Therapy includes discussions about what is going well, future possibilities, and what will likely lead to a sense of personal accomplishment. The client gains power with self-helping techniques, which makes this form of therapy a very empowering approach.

Existential Therapy

Existential therapy is a way of thinking that emphasizes our freedom to choose what to make of our personal circumstances.  It is a process of exploring a client’s values and beliefs that give meaning to living. This approach focuses on the ultimate concerns that are rooted in human existence: freedom, existential isolation, meaninglessness, and death. It focuses on the fact that we are free and therefore responsible for our own choices and actions. Even though we cannot control what happens to us, we can control how we perceive and react to our life circumstances. The goal in therapy is for the client to reclaim and re-own their own life. There are four essential aims of existential counseling:

1.      To help clients become more present to both themselves and others.
2.      To assist clients in identifying ways they block themselves from fuller presence.
3.      To challenge clients to assume responsibility for designing their present lives.
4.      To encourage clients to choose more expanded ways of being in their daily lives.

The goal of existential therapy is to assist clients to take positive action based on their honest appraisal of their life’s purpose. The therapist’s task is to encourage clients to consider what they are most passionate about, so they can pursue that positive direction in their lives.

Reality Therapy

The main focus of reality therapy is that we can only control what we are presently doing.  We may be a product of our past, but we are not the victims of our past unless we choose to be. Reality therapy focuses on doing and the creation and implementation of action plans. Clients can improve the overall quality of their lives through honest examination of their wants, needs and how they perceive their lives to be. Reality counseling recognizes that all behavior is aimed at fulfilling the essential human needs for survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun. In counseling we will explore your personal life balance and explore ways to create a more fulfilling, greater balance in your life’s experience.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is utilized to change unhealthy thinking pattern and behaviors and develop an awareness of the connection between a person’s thoughts, feelings and actions. CBT is a type of psychotherapy in which negative patterns of thought about the self and the world are challenged in order to alter unwanted behavior patterns. CBT integrates the cognitive restructuring approach of cognitive therapy with the behavioral modification techniques of behavioral therapy.  The therapist works with the client to identify both the thoughts and the behaviors that are causing distress, and to change those thoughts in order to readjust the behavior patterns.

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is utilized to change unhealthy thinking pattern and behaviors and develop an awareness of the connection between a person’s thoughts, feelings and actions. Trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy is an evidence-based psychotherapy or counselling that aims at addressing the needs of children and adults with post traumatic stress disorder and other difficulties related to traumatic life events.

Somatic Body Oriented Therapy

Body-oriented models such as Somatic Experiencing® may be utilized to encourage harmony of spirit, body, and mind after a traumatic experience or chronic stress. The Somatic Experiencing® method is a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter A. Levine, resulting from his multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics, together with over 45 years of successful clinical application. The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.  Somatic Experiencing® offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states. It provides effective skills appropriate to a variety of healing professions including mental health, medicine, physical and occupational therapies, bodywork, addiction treatment, first response, education, and others.

EMDR Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a type of psychotherapy that was developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. The therapy is primarily used to help individuals process and overcome distressing memories, especially those related to trauma.

How EMDR works:

EMDR involves the patient recalling distressing memories while the therapist uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements (hence the name “eye movement” in EMDR). The idea is that the bilateral stimulation helps the brain process and reframe traumatic memories, reducing their emotional charge. Over time, the goal is to reprocess these memories so they no longer cause ongoing distress.

Conditions EMDR is used to treat:

EMDR is most commonly used to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but it can also be beneficial for various other conditions, including:

  1. Trauma and PTSD: Individuals who have experienced events like abuse, accidents, or natural disasters.
  2. Anxiety: Including generalized anxiety and panic disorders.
  3. Depression: Especially if linked to past traumatic events.
  4. Phobias: Specific fears, like fear of flying or spiders.
  5. Grief: To help individuals cope with loss or bereavement.
  6. Addictions: Particularly when trauma or emotional issues are part of the addiction cycle.
  7. Chronic Pain: If linked to past trauma or emotional wounds.
  8. Performance Anxiety: Helping athletes, performers, or others reduce anxiety related to performance.

I’m Todd, and I’m deeply committed to supporting individuals through their struggles with addiction and mental health challenges. My goal is to walk alongside you as you navigate your journey toward transformation and healing. I believe that life is an ongoing process, and each day offers an opportunity to take one more step toward becoming the person you’re meant to be.

I work with teens, individuals, and families facing a variety of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional challenges, including addiction. I’m here to collaborate with you throughout the healing process, offering guidance and support along the way. My approach integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy, tailored to your unique needs.

I hold credentials as an Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (AADC) in South Carolina and a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) in North Carolina. I work with clients ages 12 and up, as well as families, and I’m passionate about helping you move toward a healthier, more fulfilling life. I look forward to the opportunity to work together on your path to lasting change and happiness.

Hi, I’m Kristine. Life can be unpredictable, and at times, it can feel overwhelming and messy. We all have our own unique journey, and sometimes, along the way, we get lost. Whether you’re dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, life transitions, addiction, recovery, self-esteem, grief, domestic violence, or even seeking Christian counseling, I’m here to help guide you through the challenges you're facing.

My path has been one of change, inspiration, and hope, and I know firsthand what it’s like to start over. If you can relate, I’d love to help you navigate your journey. Whatever brought you here today, let’s figure it out together.

I work with teens and adults using a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and a variety of other evidence-based, person-centered approaches to meet each individual’s needs. I maintain a safe and supportive space where you can explore interpersonal conflicts and emotional pain that may be holding you back.

I believe that change begins when we understand what isn’t working in our lives and learn how to find our own answers. You may already have those answers within you, but sometimes we all need a little help to see them clearly. I’m here to support you on that journey.

Please give our office a call to see if I may be the right fit for you. I look forward to the possibility of working together to create meaningful change in your life.

Hi, I’m Joanne! I work with children ages 5 and up, adults, individuals, families, and couples. My passion lies in creating and maintaining a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can explore their experiences, uncover their inner strength, and discover resilience. I believe that everyone has the ability to heal and grow, and I’m here to empower you throughout that journey.

I take a collaborative approach to therapy, tailoring my techniques to fit each client’s unique needs. I’m warm, empathetic, and committed to using a variety of strength-based therapeutic methods, including Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT, and mindfulness practices. My goal is to help you reach your goals, whether they involve managing mental health challenges or improving your relationships.

I have experience working with a broad range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, anger management, ADD/ADHD, adoption issues, family conflict, child welfare, self-esteem struggles, crisis intervention, grief, trauma, PTSD, communication issues, and personality disorders. In addition, I specialize in couples counseling, including premarital, marital, and blended family therapy.

I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to support children, families, couples, and individuals as they work towards mental and emotional wellness. No matter what you’re facing, I’m here to walk alongside you in creating the life and relationships you desire.

Today, you are one step closer to a new version of yourself—one where you feel empowered and on a positive path to growth and well-being. As a solution-focused therapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life worth celebrating. While we can’t change the difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve your current challenges.

By applying complementary therapy approaches, we will uncover long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be preventing you from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

I use evidence-based interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is a well-researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help individuals recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms.

I have extensive experience working with victims of trauma, including those affected by violence, addiction recovery, and clients dealing with grief and loss. I believe that connecting with a compassionate counselor is the most important first step toward healing and growth.

We all have times in which we struggle in life and need a helping hand. We face choices in life, circumstances come up. Life happens and our normal ways of dealing and coping aren't working. I utilize a person-centered approach, working with the client to find what works, as I recognize that there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to an individual's unique needs. I approach counseling with empathy and free of judgment. I specialize in managing depression, anxiety, anger management, relationship and couples issues, and LGBTQ+ issues.

I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness, and a variety of other evidence-based, person-centered approaches to meet the needs of my clients. I am solution-focused and strengths-focused. The goal is to find the approach that works for the individual. Working together we can accomplish your therapeutic goals. I am also a Certified Prepare Enrich counselor working with couples and relationship issues.

I am currently a LPCA under the supervision of Sandy Quast, LPCS of Coastal Haven Counseling.

Courage is that part of us that tells us to try again when we feel defeated or discouraged when things don't go as planned despite our efforts. I believe that understanding and acceptance of our uniqueness and respecting different ways of learning, doing, and being our "personal best" is key to our well-being and positive sense of self. For me, counseling provides a safe haven for the release of thoughts and feelings without judgement. It can help open yourself to shaping and changing for positive behaviors and actions.

Throughout my life and thirty years of career experiences in the areas of counseling,  education and social work, I have sought to be an informed advocate for children, adolescents , and families.  I specialize in working with children and adolescents and adults with academic, social and emotional challenges, including ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, Family Conflict, Self-Esteem, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Behavioral Disorders. I have training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and mindfulness techniques to treat anxiety, depression and mood disorders.  I look forward to helping you confront challenges and build confidence for future goals.
